Research

Welcome to the Birmingham Conservatoire Research Pages.

Research degrees have been offered at Birmingham Conservatoire since 1993. Research directly underpins our central mission of promoting the highest standards of artistry, technique and understanding in the practice of music of many cultural traditions.

We currently have a vacancie for a studentship research post. For more information please download the advert here.

In the 2008 Birmingham Conservatoire took part in the Research Assesment Exercise (RAE) which is a national audit measuring research quality across the UK education sector. The results released officially recognise Birmingham Conservatoire as a creator of world-leading research. In the assessment we have been identified as one of the top three conservatoires in the country and the best outside London. For further information on the specific research papers submitted to the RAE, and for details of our staff's expertise please contact us on the below details.

We are unique among UK conservatoires in being the music faculty of a university. Birmingham City University provides excellent support both for our research degrees programmes and the development of our research infrastructure. Our focus, naturally, is on performance and composition, but our staff include an experienced team of musicologists with specialisms ranging from Tinctoris and Charpentier to Messiaen and Berio. Two areas of special interest are Composition and Performance using Music Technology, which brings together composers, performers and computer scientists, and the aesthetics and analysis of performance. Go to Research Staff and Specialisms for more details.
