In this varied programme, the premiere of Edward Top’s winning Millennium Commission composition is presented alongside Webern’s 12-tone concerto for nine instruments, two works by Jonathan Harvey and a piece by Conservatoire composition student Samuel Bordoli. Composed in 1997 for 16 players and electronics, the new ‘modernised’ version of Wheel of Emptiness was performed as part of the Integra 2008 Festival, while Samuel Bordoli received feedback on Eta carinae nebula from Pierre Boulez in an open masterclass during ‘Boulez in Birmingham’.
