Conductor: Nicholas Cleobury

Colin Matthews Contraflow / Two Tributes / The Journey Ends Here
Fumiko Miyachi Midalegami (world première)
Schoenberg 1st Kammersymphonie

As part of this concert, featuring music by British composer Colin Matthews, our contemporary ensemble performs his challenging Contraflow. Two Tributes is a short work composed as a 90th birthday present for Elliot Carter, which Colin describes as "an attempt to encapsulate some of the energy of a remarkable man". The Journey Ends Here was premiered by Birmingham Contemporary Music Group in 2001 and here features Gabrielle Kaufman on cello. The programme also includes the 2006 New Millennium Commission Midalegami by Fumiko Miyachi and concludes with a major 20th century work exploring the extremes of classical tonality.

Part of Frontiers Plus, a mini-festival celebrating new music (3-14 March 2008) and Chamber MusicFest 2008: 'Around Britten' (10-14 March 2008).
