Accompanist of the Year Announced

Posted 24/11/09 Following the Final Round of the Yamaha Birmingham Accompanist of the Year Award, Yshani Perinpanayagam, who performed with soprano Rhona McKail and violinist Fenella Humphreys, has claimed the title for 2009. Congratulations to Yshani and many thanks to Yamaha UK and to our adjudicator, Roger Vignoles.


Philip Bates Prize Winners Announced

Posted 20/11/09 Congratulations to the winners of the 2009 Philip Bates Prize for Composers and Songwriters (the Final of which was held on 6 November):
  • First Prize (£600): Pleiades by Simone Spagnolo
  • Second Prize (£300): JOINT WINNERS My Perspective by Pete Yelding & Ophelia: the death of by Luke Iveson
  • Audience Prize (£100): Ophelia:the death of by Luke Iveson
The adjudicators were Ian Wallman and Martin Bates, chaired by Joe Cutler. The audience prize was decided by ballot after hearing all six pieces.


Historical Instruments Go Online

Posted 11/03/09 A web-based catalogue detailing the Conservatoire's Historical Instrument Collection is now available online. Free for all to use, the catalogue contains photographs, audio files and detailed technical information on all the instruments. The project, led by Professors George Caird and Peter Johnson and Instrument Custodian Martin Perkins, was funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council. To browse the catalogue, visit the HIC website.


2008 Research Assessment Exercise Success for Birmingham Conservatoire

Posted 02/01/09 Birmingham City University has taken part in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, which is a national audit measuring research quality across the UK education sector. The results have now been released and Birmingham City University has been officially recognised for its world-leading research. In the assessment Birmingham Conservatoire has been recognised as one of the top three conservatoires in the country and the best outside London.
